U 101 Listserv

A listserver is a mailing list agent available on frank(HP 9000) at MTSU that keeps track of thousands of people subscribed to any number of mailing lists. A discussion list(Listserv) is an on-line forum that has a limited group of subscribers that exchange information and discuss specific topics on the Internet. Users interact with the listserver via electronic mail (e-mail). This is an efficient way to communicate and exchange ideas with each other through email. MTSU uses Listproc 6.0 as its mailing list agent

The discussion list is an efficient and effective tool for class instruction and research. Colleges and universities use Internet mailing lists to facilitate and enhance classroom discussion. The discussion list can be used in MTSU courses.

Many courses in several MTSU departments have used the discussion list. For example, in an English literature class the students post their comments about a book to the list. Fellow students can read those comments and respond to the comments as well.

There are two levels of users on the listserver, regular users or subscribers and owners. Subscribers are users that subscribe to the list and post messages to the list. The owners sponsor the list and oversee the functions of the list. Owners can also post messages. There is a system manager that oversees the entire operation.

A variety of requests can be sent to the listserver. The subject field should be blank. You need to send your request to the listserver on which the discussion list resides. The address on frank at MTSU is listproc@frank.mtsu.edu

We have set up a listserv for U 101 instructors:

The address for our listserv is U101-L@frank.mtsu.edu

When you send a message addressed as above, it will go to everyone who has subscribed to that listserv.

To subscribe to the listserv set up for U101-L: send a message to listproc@frank.mtsu.edu with the subject field blank. The message body should be: SUB U101-L your first name then your last name.

Example: SUB U101-L Carolyn Hopper

Detailed information for using LISTPROC can be found on the web at http://www.mtsu.edu/~listadm
