One of the primary objectives of this course is to provided a positive adjustment to college life and to provide exposure to the resources and services at MTSU. An examination of the resources available addresses this objective.
Chapter 5 pages 110-112 The Confident Student
There are really three essential publications that students at MTSU should be aware of: The
MTSU Catalog , Student Handbook, and the schedule book ( or information found on Web MT) . In addition, students should be aware of the importance of the class syllabus. Students will not probably not remember the information they look up in these publications until they need that information so the best approach may be to make sure students know the type of information in each book so they will know where to look when a need arises. All three publication on on-line in addition to hard copy. You may also find MTSU Home Page and Student Affairs Departments on line helpful. I usually suggest they these make "good bathroom reading." The information is essential to success at MTSU, but they are not publications one would sit and read at one time. You may have covered a good deal of this information in the first days of class. You may want to do a scavenger hunt like
agent student or the power point presentations introducing the resources. (You can down load the slides and make transparencies if you wish)If this lesson follows the introduction to e-mail and the internet, you can students explore the resources and bring one thing they found in each that they didn't know before.
If this lesson is before the internet day, You can explore the hard copies in class and find the on-line ones the next class period.
You may want to divide the class in groups and have each group responsible for introducing one of the publication to the rest of the group.
Assignments and Follow up
For the next several days when you call roll, you might have students answer with a fact found in one of the publications and have the other students identify the source.
Students may create a scavenger hunt similar to
agent student. If you don't use the
power point slides in class, assign students to view them.
