Textbook Reading

Ideas and Activities

Given what students know about how the memory works and their learning styles, they should be able to devise methods to actively read textbooks. The information and exercises in the text is thorough. The power point slides suggest using the same label in the margin method discussed for taking notes and makes connections to how the memory works.

Possible Journal Entries

Describe the ways you typically read a text book. Analyze the effectiveness of this method.

Discuss how reading the newspaper, a novel, a textbook differ.

Discuss how being an active reading is like (and/or different from) being an active listener.

Follow Up-Assignments

Have students try different methods over the next week or so and report either to the class or in a journal entry what they discover.
