"From ghoulies and ghosties and long-leggety beasties
and things that go bump in the night,
Good Lord, deliver us!"
- a Cornish prayer

      Scary Stories

      MAIN COLLECTION 133.3 B41b 1972
A mysterious spirit, by Charles Bailey Bell. The Bell witch of Tennessee [by] Harriet Parks Miller. Nashville, Tenn., C. Elder, 1972.
My younger sister and her best friend loved horror stories, movies and such (not me). One night they decided that since I loved to read, I should read the Bell Witch to them. We settled in my bed with the just the lamp on for light. We lived in the county, so all the windows and doors were open and it was dark out. I read for some time and then heard a noise, I froze and then realized it was snoring from my younger sister. Looking around, I discovered that I was the only one awake in this small dim circle of light in a very dark world that seemed to be getting smaller as I watched. I put the book down, left the light on and tried to join my bed mates in slumber. Diane Baird

Dracula, the original. I read it in the summer -- it's hard to sleep in an un-air-conditioned bedroom with all the windows shut!
      Harriette Gaida

Some of the scariest books are not ghost stories or horror stories. Try ON THE BEACH by Nevil Shute. 823.912 N83o. This is end of the world psychological horror which gave me nightmares for two weeks after I read it 20-some years ago. My parents argued over whether I was ready to read it or not. Mom won. I read it. Dad won. I had nightmares because I read it.
      Sherry Norris
